About Veeraraghava Perumal Temple

According to the history, Sage Purupunyar and his wife Satyavathi performed  Putrakameshi Yagam (Prayer for getting Child). From this Yagam they got a son named Salihotrar. Salihotrar grew up as a helpful young man who used to keep some food for hungry souls especially holy man.

Once Lord Vishnu appeared as a sage in front of Salihotrar’s house. The sage asked food to Salihotrar , at that time , he gave all his food to the divine sage. After that the sage asked some place to sleep. Salihotrar  invited him to sleep in his little hut. As the sage lay, his kept his head towards south. Then Salihotrar came to know that the sage is the Great Lord Vishnu. Then Lord Vishnu appeared before him as Sri Veeraraghava Perumal. As the Perumal asked for some place to sleep, that area was came to know as "Evvulor" (Evv - This Place, Ulor - Here) . After some time, The place is named as Thiru Evvulor, then got changed to Tiruvallur.

The main offering to the deity is to give salt and pepper. It is believed that  if devotee take bath in the temple tank, they will be cured from the warts in their skin and any kind of skin problems will vanish. It is a belief, that The mental problems are also cured by taking the temple theeratham. There are inscriptions dating back to the 2nd half of the 9th century Pallava dynasty reign here. Abishekam to the Lord is done only with sandalwood oil.Thirumangai Alvar and Thirumalisai Alvar have composed beautiful Paasurams on Lord Veeraraghava Swami. It is one of the compositions in Naalayira Divya Prabandha.
