About Sun Temple

In ancient days  the areas near Modhera were called  Dharmaranya .As mentioned in Skanda Purana and Brahma Purana, after defeating  Ravana,Lord Rama asked sage Vasistha to show him a place where he could purify himself from this sin.Sage Vasistha asked him to purify himself in Dharmaranya which is near  Modhera.Lord Rama settled in Modhera village and performed yagna. From then the village is called  Sitapur.

The Sun temple at Modhera was constructed by Rushabh Bhimdev I of Solanki Dynasty in AD 1026.The Solankis were considered to be  Suryavanshi Gurjars or descendants of the Sun god. This Hindu temple was so designed that the first rays of the sun fell on the image of Surya, the Sun god at the time of the equinoxes. This Indian temple has a unique architecture. The temple complex comprises of three separate axially aligned and integrated elements that is, Surya Kund,Sabha Mandap and Gudu Mandap.

The Surya Kund is also called as Ramakund which is large rectangular stepped tank measuring 53.6 x 36.6  which is used to store water. The kund architechture was unique and the stone arrangement gives a dazzling pattern of art.In this kund there are numerous stone steps which takes the devotee to the base. There are 108 small shrines  carved between these stone steps. This is one of the famous Hindu temples in India.

Sabha mandapa is a hall for religious gatherings and consists of 52 intricately carved stone pillars representing 52 weeks in a year. The walls have 12 niches showing the different aspects of the Sun god in each month. This temple was built by the Solankis in honour of their ancestral god. It was plundered by Mahmud Ghazni. The entire gold idol was taken away by him.The exterior of the temple walls has 12 different postures of Adityas - Sun God along with eight Dikpals. Lord Vishwakarma - who constructed  Dwarka  for  Krishna, Varundev - god of Water, Agnidev - god of Fire, Ganesh - god of all auspicious beginnings,  Mata Saraswati - goddess of education and wisdom, are also worshipped in this Indian temple
