About Ramanathaswamy Temple

Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple is a famous Hindu temple. It is situated in Rameswaram town of Ramanathapuram district, Tamilnadu. This temple is devoted to lord Shiva. The most famous saints Nayanmars (Saivite Saints), Saint Appar, Saint Sundarar and Saint Tirugnana Sambandar fames this temple with their songs. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams. In the 12th century this temple was built by Pandya Dynasty.This temple is a holy pilgrimage site for Shaivites, Vaishnavites and Smarthas.

According to the Ramayana, lord Vishnu prayed lord Shiva for remove sin of killing Brahmana. Sri Rama wanted a huge idol of Linga to worship. He ordered Hanuman, to bring the idol of lingam from Himalayas. Hanuman delated to bring the lingam,so Sri Sita, the wife of Rama, built a lingam by using the sand that is available in the sea shore.

In this holy temple, there are 2 Shiva lingam are placed. One was brought by Hanuman and other one is created by Sri Sita. That lingams are called as Sri Ramalingam and Sri Vishwalingam. Sri Vishwalingam(Sri Ramanathaswamy) should be worshipped first. Sri Ramanathaswami and Goddess Sri Visalakshi has separate Srine in this temple. Sri Parvathavardhini, Sri sayanagriha, sri perumal, sri Mohaganpathi also having the separate srines in this temple. Anuppu Mandapam, Sukravara Mandapam, Sethupathi Mandapam, Kalyana Mandapam and Nandi Mandapam are placed inside the temple.

After taking a bath from the well it will refresh our body and mind. This also cures all the diseases.

There are 64 Thirtham for this temple. Inside this temple 22 Thirthams are there and others are spread across the city.

Rama broke the bridge with one end of his bow.It is also said that Rama originally marked the spot for the bridge with one end of his famous bow.
