Kalighat Kali Temple of Devi / Shakti in the form of Kali Kali Temple Road, Kalighat, Kolkata-700026

It is one of the 51 Shakthi Peethas. Kalighat represents the site where the toes of the right foot of Shakti or Sati fell. On snanyatra day, while giving the divine Mother the ceremonial bath, the priests tie their eyes with cloth coverings.

About Kalighat Kali Temple

Kalighat Kali Temple is a famous Hindu temple. It is dedicated to Kolkata, West Bengal. This temple is dedicated to Goddess  Kali. This temple is one of the 51 shakti peetha. This temple is near the Hoogly river in the city of kolkatta.

According to the history, Kalighat is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. The Various part of the Sati's body are fallen down in different places.  Sati's right foot was fell down here. A Svayambhu Lingam of Nakuleshwar Bhairav nearby,in the middle of the forest he started to worship.This temple is 200 years old. In 15th century this temple was ruled by Mansar Bhasan. In the 17th century it was ruled by Kavi Kankan Chani.

In the olden days, this temple was a hut. In the 16th century, the King Manasingha was built this temple. It was completed in 1809.  

Kalighat paintings was started in the 19th century and the Visitors collect the paintings. The Kalighat paintings developed Hindu gods, goddess and other characters.

Kali image in this temple is too different. The deity of this temple was manufactured by two saints. They are Brahmananda Giri and Atmaram Giri. The deity is in the form of three huge eyes,long reddish tongue. Its all made by using gold. Two hands holding the head of the demons (Asura). The other two hands are in the blessings.
