About Dakshineswar Kali Temple

Dakshineswar Kali temple is a famous Hindu temple in India. It is located at Dakshineswar near Kolkata. The deity of this temple is  Bhavatarani, a feature of goddess  Kali who is described as "She who liberates Her devotees from the ocean of existence".

Queen Rashmoni built this Indian temple in 1855. She was a philanthropist and a devotee of Kali. Kali Devi appeared in the dreams of Rani Rashmoni and instructed her to construct a beautiful temple on the banks of the Hoogly River and install her idol in it. She also said that she would manifest herself in the image over there. It is one of the largest temples in Kolkata.

Queen Rashmoni lived only for five years and nine months after the inauguration of the temple. She  fell seriously ill in 1861. Realizing that her death was near she decided to handover the property she purchased in Dinajput (now located in Bangladesh) for the maintenance of the temple to the temple trust as a legacy. She accomplished her task on 18 February 1861 and passed away the next day.

Ramakrishna was a mystic of 19th century Bengal. The temple is famous for the association with Ramakrishna. The hall or chamber is in the north western corner of the Lord Shiva temple. This is called as ‘Nahavat-Khana’ where sage Ramakrishna spent a considerable part of his life.

The Garbha Griha (sanctum sanctorum) houses an idol of Goddess  Kali, known as  Bhavataraini, standing on the chest of a prostrate Shiva, and the two idols are placed on a thousand-petaled lotus made of silver.

Close to the main Hindu temple is a row of twelve identical Shiva temples built facing east in the typical ‘Aat Chala’ Bengal architecture. These are built on either side of the ghat on the Hoogly river. To the north east of the temple complex is the Vishnu temple or the Radha Kanta’s temple.
